Trick #1 Don't be afraid of the dark
I'm currently obsessed with dark colors right now, especially for accent walls. Clients tend to be extremely scared when I bring up the idea of using a dark color on an accent wall because they instantly think it will make the area look uninviting and heavy. But, this is far from the truth - when using dark colors, it's important to pair them with lots of lighting (natural and electric) and bright whites to create a more balanced feel to create that 'high-contrast-magazine' feel.

Trick #2 Use flowers (or plants) for a pop of color
It's super easy to pick up some flowers on your way home, or maybe when you stop off for your groceries. It doesn't have to be a fancy-shmancy floral arrangement, just a bunch while colors that you like to add just a bit of drama to your TV credenza or your side tables...it'll make a world of difference!

Trick #3 Use white bedding, but...
Pair your white hotel-like sheets with a colorful duvet and throw pillows to create a designer look and feel. The trick of the white bedding is that it makes the room feel bigger while also making the room feel relaxed. Adding in a nice color scheme with the extra pillows and throw will make the room feel less sterile and more like a home than a hotel.
