Ritz Carlton South Beach Lighting Design

Hey Guys!

Hope you had a great Valentine's Day :)

One of my favorite places to stay when I visit South Beach Miami is The Ritz Carlton South Beach because not only is it right on the beach, but the interior and lighting design in the lobby captivated me from my very first visit! The lobby has the typical essentials like the waiting area, reception and concierge area, and also bar area, but the design, particularly lighting, are anything but typical.

There are so many uses for different lighting designs that Interior Designers utilize to get their concepts across to clients and users of the spaces. Of course the main ones I learned through design school were to give light to a dark area, to bring nature into the space by use of natural sunlight, to highlight specific areas or things and to enhance a design to draw the clients/users eye into the specific design. I can definitely say that The Ritz Carlton South Beach integrated these design principles into their designs.

I took some pictures of the lobby from my blackberry on my last trip.....so the pictures aren't top notch (lol) but hopefully you can see some of the designs.

Enjoy!
Light Fixture at the Entrance of the Lobby
I loved this lighting fixture because of the textured glass, cream lampshades and the wrought-iron and silver accents all work together without over powering each other. I also noticed that the designers decided on this fixture because the silver cones under the lampshades mimic the shapes of the iron work on the balcony above.

Reception Area and Waiting Area w/ Stairs in the back leading to the Bar

Lit Wall in Waiting Area
This is the main 'waw' factor in the reception/waiting area of the lobby because the wall goes all the way up to the ceiling, so it can also be seen in the upstairs eating area. The wall is a very modern and innovative design to integrate lighting into an open space such as this. The chrome fixtures are not necessarily supplying task lighting but they're there for the main purpose of highlighting the wood-paneled wall.

Recessed Lighting on the ceiling supplies lighting to the Coral Decor on the table

Lobby Bar Area w/ Bar Seating and Floor Seating
This area is so simple but effective. The under-counter lighting on the bar draws eyes towards the bar area which was a great concept to use because the elevators are adjacent to the bar; so either when people are leaving or coming, their eyes would be attracted to the bar and may be persuaded to have a drink or two.

Seating near Hotel Shopping Area w/ Natural Lighting
I loved this architectural detail of slanted ceiling-mounted windows to the building because not only does it bring the natural element into the space, but it actually helps the hotel use less electrical lighting during daytime so in this way they're being sustainable.

Hope you enjoyed this post. Tell me your thoughts about the Ritz design!
